Liam's story

I thought I'd share a summarized version of Liam's birth story since I've had people ask..

So I woke up at 2:30am on Tuesday, January 12th with some pretty hard contractions. In fact, they were so intense that I didn't even time them for a whole hour, I just called my sister to come over and stay with our kids and then told Jason to pack his bags. So we drove to the hospital and by the time we got a doctor to come in and check me around 4am, my contractions had really calmed down (I was so mad). However, I was dilated to a 4, so they said I could stay. After I was admitted, I basically walked the halls and did everything I could to get things going. After several hours of laboring, my midwife checked me and I was still a 4. At this point they told me I could get Pitocin (no stinkin way), have my water broken, or go home. Now, mind you, I had been having false (but still painful) labor for over a week and I was not about to go home! So I told them to break my water. Once they did, contractions finally got serious and so did I. I wanted to see if I could go without the epidural and I made it to 6 cm before I threw in the towel. Thank goodness for epidurals because I felt great after that. :) It was now about 4pm and I was able to rest for about 2 hours before I was fully dilated and ready to push. I pushed 6 times and he was born at 6:18pm on January 12th. I got to hold him immediately and he was just beautiful. The midwife and nurses thought he looked big and guessed he would be about 8 1/2 pounds, but he was only 7lb. 10oz., my smallest baby. I loved my midwife and had a great experience at Kaiser.

p.s. Way to go Hillary for guessing Liam's birthday! We will have to figure out a way to get you your treat. :)
